Project Details

During 1918, two lovers who were separated by war, sent postcards to each other. Some cards were comic, some sentimental and some patriotic. But what was written on the back tells the story of romance through illness, separation and war.

Originally part of the Machine Guns Corps, Sam Gall had been wounded in France and by1918 was a member of Number 47 Reserve Company. Louie Smith was at home looking after her father and her half-sister, Elsie. We don’t know when Sam met Louie, but we do know that by June 1918, the postcard romance had begun.
